Chapter 15

Kingston

Ramming a parcel into a mailbox, I numbly went to the next one, shoving a bundle of crap in, without really looking to see if the address matched. I would probably get complaints later for fucking it all up. I didn’t care. My mind was so occupied, I couldn’t settle on anything for long.

After I left Sawyer’s, I went home and sat next to my mom the rest of the night, watching her sleep, sensing the final tether to any joy I held about to snap. Selfishly, I wanted her to stay with me, even in all her pain. To not leave me. Give me a reason to get up in the morning and not allow all the anger and grief to drown me in darkness. I could feel it. The claws sinking into my legs, already having a firm grip on me. My mother was literally the one thing I had left, and when she went…

So would I.

Enraged jealousy tainted the room, turning everything ugly and meaningless. Kathleen’s hand on my ass made my stomach rot; I wanted to crawl out of my skin.

“Andrew will be away with one of his many bimbos,” Kathleen muttered in my ear. “We can be as loud as we want. I’m going to go now… follow behind in twenty. I’ll have a car waiting for you out front. Call the number when you arrive,” she purred before turning her political face on, smiling and saying goodnight to everyone.

Waiting over forty, I had downed another two drinks before I headed out, aware of what was riding on me doing what Kathleen wanted. More and more anger bristled up my neck as my thoughts went darker and darker. Visions of Sawyer, Dutch over her, hammering into her, gripped me with jealousy. It crawled over me like tar, spreading and taking over.

A sleek black car had rolled up to the curb. My ride to the mansion in the upper-class section of town, one I would
